Early Acoustic Scene and M.Y.M.P.’s Rise to Fame
In the early 2000s, the acoustic music scene was a significant part of OPM (Original Pinoy Music). However, by 2004, solo artists began dominating the spotlight. This trend shifted with the arrival of M.Y.M.P., a band that reshaped the early acoustic scene in the Philippines.
Originally known as Make Your Momma Proud, M.Y.M.P. performed as a showband before transitioning into an acoustic trio. The group featured vocalist Juris Fernandez, guitarist Chin Alcantara, and singer-percussionist Mike Manahan. This lineup soon made waves, changing how acoustic music was perceived locally.
Discovering M.Y.M.P.: The Turning Point
Music industry insiders recall how the heads of a major local label first saw M.Y.M.P. perform at the Ipanema bar in Eastwood, Quezon City. The label’s representatives attended the show partly due to recommendations from key figures in the industry, including a popular radio personality who also wrote songs. Though the label had been aware of Juris Fernandez’s talent before, the live performance solidified their decision to sign the band.
The Song That Changed Everything
One of M.Y.M.P.’s biggest assets was a song titled “A Little Bit,” introduced to the label by the radio personality. Initially recorded as a simple vocal demo on cassette, the song was transformed when guitarist Chin Alcantara added a memorable acoustic arrangement. Juris Fernandez’s smooth voice brought the lyrics to life, singing, “I’m a little bit of crazy, a little bit of a fool / I’m a little bit of lonely, I’m a little bit of all oh, I need a cure.”
When “A Little Bit” was released in 2004 alongside another single, “Paalam Na,” it didn’t immediately skyrocket to fame. In fact, some questioned whether acoustic music was still popular. But the song’s charm quickly won over radio listeners and live audiences. Eventually, “A Little Bit” achieved Gold and then Platinum status, securing M.Y.M.P.’s place as a leading acoustic band in the Philippines.
Legacy and Modern Reinterpretation
“A Little Bit” remains a beloved classic and was recently reimagined on the album “SWABE” by young singer Earl Agustin. Earl infused the song with an R&B flair, capturing the heartfelt emotions of the original while giving it a fresh, contemporary sound.
Industry veterans note that the success of M.Y.M.P. was a combination of timing, talent, and the perfect song. Their rise marked a revival in the acoustic scene and inspired many artists who followed.
