Early proclamation of top six candidates urged amid partial results
Sagip Party-list Representative Rodante Marcoleta has formally requested the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to proclaim the top six candidates in the Senate race based on the partial and unofficial count so far. He highlighted that as of now, 97.23% of election returns have already been transmitted.
Marcoleta, who himself is currently positioned sixth in the senatorial race with a total of 14,895,858 votes, emphasized the statistical improbability that candidates ranked 7th to 12th will surpass the leading six. “As of writing, 97.23% of election returns have already been transmitted, with herein movant, senatorial dandidate Rodante ‘Dante’ Marcoleta, currently ranking 6th in the senatorial race, having garnered a total of 14,895,858 votes,” he stated in a motion submitted to Comelec.
Statistical improbability supports early proclamation
He further explained, “Hence, may we respectfully pray that, should this Honorable Commission determine that it is statistically improbable for the rankings of the leading senatorial candidates to be altered based on the official canvass returns, it should consider allowing the early proclamation of the top-ranking Senators whose positions can no longer be reasonably contested.”
Along with his request for early proclamation, Marcoleta also urged the Comelec to provide an explanation regarding alleged discrepancies and duplication of partial unofficial votes.
Context of the Senate race and political affiliations
Marcoleta is among the 12 Senate candidates endorsed by PDP Laban, the party headed by former President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte is currently detained in the Netherlands facing allegations related to crimes against humanity over drug war killings. Despite the endorsement, Marcoleta himself is not a member of PDP Laban.
Comelec’s ongoing canvassing and timeline
The Commission on Elections, acting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), resumed its canvassing of votes for senators and party-list groups on Tuesday, marking a crucial phase in the election process for Eleksyon 2025. The NBOC aims to proclaim all 12 winning senators by Saturday, May 17.
As the partial and unofficial results come in, the call for the early proclamation of top six candidates gains momentum, reflecting the confidence in the current standings amid the remaining vote counts. This move seeks to bring clarity and certainty to the election outcomes as soon as possible.
