Early voting welcomes senior citizens in Cebu
Senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and pregnant women are given priority during early voting hours from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Cebu City. They patiently line up in various polling precincts, taking advantage of the special schedule designed for the vulnerable sector.
At Basak Elementary School in Lapu-Lapu City, early morning voters from these groups have already begun casting their ballots. Other schools like Talisay City Central Elementary, Guadalupe Elementary in Cebu City, and Mandaue City Central School also opened their doors early to serve these voters.
Priority lanes and support for the vulnerable
In Mandaue City Central School, even senior citizens who face mobility challenges did not let their condition stop them from voting. The community’s determination shines through despite physical difficulties.
Guadalupe Elementary School, the largest voting center in the area, started seeing lines form as early as 3:30 a.m. Most of those in line belong to the vulnerable sector, who are given access to a dedicated priority lane to ensure a smooth and respectful voting experience.
Security and preparations at polling centers
Electoral boards have been busy preparing election materials to ensure everything runs smoothly. Meanwhile, police officers maintain tight security throughout the area. A Police Assistance Desk is set up inside Guadalupe Elementary, and officers are constantly patrolling to safeguard voters.
This school is also where several candidates are expected to cast their votes, adding to the buzz of the day.
Voter turnout and significance
Today, at least 721,469 registered voters in Cebu City are expected to participate in the election. The entire Cebu province boasts 3.4 million registered voters, making it the fifth most vote-rich province in the Philippines.
This early voting effort highlights the importance of accommodating the vulnerable sectors and ensuring they can exercise their right to vote comfortably and safely.
