Earthquake-Resilient San Juan Reservoir Boosts Water Supply

Building a Stronger Water Future

Manila Water is advancing efforts to secure the region’s water resources by constructing an earthquake-resilient San Juan Reservoir. This vital infrastructure aims to enhance water supply reliability for the fast-growing cities of Quezon City, San Juan, and Mandaluyong.

Located along N. Domingo Street in Quezon City, the ₱932-million San Juan Reservoir project is engineered to store up to 56 million liters of water. More importantly, it is designed to endure seismic activity up to magnitude 7.2, ensuring continued service even during major earthquakes, officials reported.

Replacing an Aging Facility with Modern Innovation

The new reservoir replaces the original structure built in 1968. It incorporates advanced engineering standards, including upgraded electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and site development systems. Local leaders noted that this robust design exemplifies Manila Water’s dedication to resilient infrastructure capable of meeting the increasing demand for clean, reliable water.

One community member shared, “The San Juan Reservoir is more than just a new facility. It’s a forward-looking investment in resilience and reliability. As our cities continue to grow, we must ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace. This project reflects Manila Water’s commitment to safeguarding water supply for our communities, even in the face of natural disasters like major earthquakes.”

Project Progress and Construction Highlights

As of July 2025, the San Juan Reservoir project has reached nearly 27% completion and remains on target for full completion by the third quarter of 2026. Construction teams are currently focused on continuous excavation, lean concreting, and rebar fabrication for the Phase 1 mat foundation, followed by rebar installation for the foundation itself, sources said.

To minimize disruption to nearby residents, acoustic barriers have been installed to reduce noise and construction-related disturbances. This thoughtful approach highlights the project’s sensitivity to community welfare while pushing forward with critical infrastructure development.

Ensuring Long-Term Water Security and Disaster Preparedness

The earthquake-resilient San Juan Reservoir represents a strategic investment in Metro Manila’s water security and disaster readiness. With the region’s population steadily rising, this facility will play a crucial role in Manila Water’s broader plan to expand and protect water supply systems across the East Zone, officials reported.

By integrating seismic-resistant design and advanced technology, the reservoir is set to provide dependable water access even during emergencies, helping to safeguard millions of residents in Quezon City, Mandaluyong, and San Juan for years to come.
