Eastern Samar State of Emergency Declared
Eastern Samar has officially declared a state of emergency following the imposition of load restrictions on the San Juanico Bridge. This resolution was unanimously approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on Monday to address the challenges brought by these restrictions. The declaration aims to accelerate the delivery of aid and services to communities affected by the bridge limitations, which have disrupted transportation and the local economy.
The state of emergency in Eastern Samar highlights the urgency of mitigating the impact on daily life and commerce. Local leaders noted that these restrictions have posed significant obstacles to the movement of goods and people across the vital San Juanico Bridge.
Prices and Supplies Remain Stable Amid Restrictions
Despite the ongoing load restrictions, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Eastern Samar reassures the public that prices and supply of essential goods remain stable and within the suggested retail prices. Ruthelma Samonte, DTI Eastern Samar head, reported that monitoring from May 13 to 27 found no significant price changes.
Their surveillance covered a broad range of vendors, including major retailers, grocery outlets, wet markets, and local sari-sari stores. The commodities monitored under the Price Act 7581 include canned goods, processed milk, coffee, laundry soap, detergents, candles, bread, bottled water, instant noodles, flour, cement, hollow blocks, and construction nails.
Alternative Routes Ensure Continuous Supply
Samonte further explained that partial repairs on the San Juanico Bridge have not caused major price hikes or supply shortages. Although some cargo shipments from Cebu to Tacloban City experience delays, alternative pathways through Cebu City to Calbayog City and other parts of Eastern Samar are helping secure sufficient supplies.
Local authorities continue to work closely with transportation and trade sectors to minimize disruption and maintain steady delivery of basic commodities. This collaborative effort supports both consumers and businesses during this challenging period.
