Eastern Visayas Mayors Stranded Amid Israel Conflict

At least three town mayors from Eastern Visayas—Barugo, Leyte Mayor Aron Balais; Lawaan, Eastern Samar Mayor Athene Mendros; and Hindang, Leyte Mayor Betty Cabal—are currently stranded in Israel due to the intensifying Iran-Israel conflict. The escalating violence has trapped them far from home, forcing them to seek shelter in a bomb-proof bunker near their hotel.

Balais shared with local journalists that they have been part of a delegation involved in a study visit organized by the Israel Agency for International Development Cooperation. The visit focuses on sustainability and food security in urban centers, but the sudden outbreak of hostilities has disrupted their plans.

Stranded Delegates Seek Safety

The group includes 17 Philippine government officials, all of whom have been taking refuge from ongoing bombardments. “For the past three days, we have been exploring ways to leave, but all borders and airspace are closed,” Balais explained. Their current plan is to exit through Jordan, although the situation there remains chaotic.

Due to the intermittent bombardment, communication has been difficult, and Balais was unable to disclose the identities of other delegates. Meanwhile, Mayor Cabal posted on Facebook on June 8, confirming their safe arrival in Israel alongside vice mayors and a congressman, though she did not reveal their names.

Diplomatic Efforts and Embassy Support

Balais confirmed they have maintained regular contact with the Philippine Embassy. The embassy’s deputy ambassador visited them on Sunday to provide support. The foreign trip was originally scheduled to end on June 20.

The Philippine Embassy has also established a Crisis Management Team to deliver relief goods, reopen designated shelters, and coordinate possible repatriation efforts for stranded Filipinos.

Escalating Iran-Israel Conflict

The conflict intensified early on June 13 when Israeli forces launched attacks on Iranian nuclear and missile facilities, reportedly killing several top commanders and scientists. Iran retaliated by firing ballistic missiles at multiple locations across Israel.

This sudden escalation has complicated travel plans for many, including the Eastern Visayas mayors, who remain hopeful for a safe exit despite the uncertainty.
