Eco-Friendly Brigada Eskwela Starts June 9
As the Brigada Eskwela campaign kicks off on June 9, the EcoWaste Coalition is urging schools, communities, and individuals to conduct the cleanup drive in the most environmentally responsible way possible. Advocates for a zero waste and toxics-free society emphasize that an ecological Brigada Eskwela can significantly reduce pollution linked to this nationwide effort before the June 16 start of the 2025–2026 school year.
“We enjoin our schools across the country to conduct this unique expression of the ‘Bayanihan’ spirit in the most eco-friendly manner possible to avoid garbage and pollution, which may pose health and environmental risks during and even after the Brigada Eskwela,” Aileen Lucero, national coordinator of the EcoWaste Coalition, said in a statement.
Practical Eco Actions for Participants
To support this goal, the group released a comprehensive list of reminders encouraging eco-conscious habits. These include reducing single-use plastics and microplastics, avoiding open burning that releases hazardous pollutants, and limiting exposure to toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury. They also discourage tobacco and nicotine product use to minimize emissions and leftover waste.
These recommendations align with Department of Education policies, including ecological solid waste management, use of lead-safe paints, bans on e-cigarettes and smoking, and minimum standards for school buildings. Participants are encouraged to bring reusable containers instead of plastic bottles, use cleaning tools made from plant-based materials, and avoid PVC tarpaulins that may contain harmful additives.
Proper Waste Handling and Chemical Safety
Proper segregation and composting of biodegradable waste are key practices, alongside maintaining the school’s Materials Recovery Facility. The EcoWaste Coalition warns against hazardous cleaning agents like oxalic and muriatic acid and cautions against mixing bleach with other substances to prevent toxic gas formation.
They also advise careful handling of broken fluorescent lamps to avoid mercury exposure and recommend switching to mercury-free LED lights marked with safety labels. Using only certified lead-safe paints and avoiding dry sanding of surfaces with lead-based coatings are crucial for chemical safety during refurbishing.
Reinforcing Tobacco-Free Campuses
The group also reaffirms the Department of Education’s strict ban on smoking and vaping on school grounds. They call on local governments to enforce laws prohibiting the sale and distribution of tobacco products within 100 meters of schools and other places frequented by minors.
“An ecological Brigada Eskwela will also contribute to the advancement of the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment,” sources said.
