Call for a Basura-Free Eleksyon 2025
Environmental group EcoWaste Coalition reminds candidates to keep Eleksyon 2025 clean and green. As the campaign period ends on May 10, candidates must follow the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and avoid littering during their final rallies.
Zero-Waste advocate Cris Luague stresses the importance of not turning miting de avance venues into dumpsites. “Enforce RA 9003 and the ‘clean as you go’ policy,” he said. “Also, implement a ‘no smoking, no vaping’ rule to protect the environment and public health.”
Respect Campaign Ban and Avoid Plastic Waste
Aside from ending campaign litter, candidates should respect the May 12 ban on campaigning. Distribution of flyers and sample ballots should stop to prevent trash buildup around polling centers. Children and the elderly should not be used to hand out materials, as past elections showed this leads to more littering.
EcoWaste also calls on candidates to reduce plastic waste by avoiding styrofoam and single-use plastics during meals for poll watchers and volunteers. They recommend bringing reusable water containers and using segregated trash bins.
Post-Campaign Cleanup Vital for Environment
After the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections in 2023, EcoWaste found many types of litter around polling places. Because of this, the group urges all candidates—whether they win or lose—to conduct a thorough cleanup. They must remove all campaign materials and dispose of them properly following environmental laws.
By doing so, candidates show respect for the community and help protect the environment. Clean elections mean not just fair votes but also a healthier, basura-free Philippines.
