Edsa Rehabilitation May Shift to 2027 Due to ASEAN Summit
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) might postpone the Edsa rehabilitation until 2027 as the country prepares to host the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit next year. This adjustment aims to avoid disruptions during this significant international event.
In a recent interview, DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan shared that they plan to coordinate with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s office to schedule the Edsa rehabilitation after the ASEAN Summit concludes. “Preferably, during the dry months of 2027 are what we are looking as the most viable times to undertake the rehabilitation,” Bonoan said in Filipino, stressing that the timeline remains tentative.
Non-Destructive Method Recommended for Edsa Rehabilitation
Secretary Bonoan also revealed that the department recommends a “non-destructive process” for the rehabilitation. Instead of removing the entire pavement, they intend to reinforce weak sections and apply a special asphalt layer to cover cracks.
“The entire pavement will not be removed, and we will just have to actually reinforce the weak segments and then put other types of asphalt crack on top of it. The crack, we call it a crack relief layer, then asphalt on top of it, that’s the planning course,” Bonoan explained.
Currently, the DPWH awaits President Marcos’ approval to proceed with this approach. No budget estimates have been finalized for the project yet.
Project Delay Confirmed Due to Weather Conditions
Earlier, Bonoan confirmed that the Edsa rehabilitation will not push through this year because the rainy season has already begun, which could hamper construction work.
