EDSA Rehabilitation Postponed, Not Cancelled, Says DOTr
Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon clarified on Tuesday, June 3, that the much-discussed EDSA rehabilitation is only postponed, not cancelled. This update came during his ad interim appointment hearing before the Commission on Appointments’ Committee on Transportation. “EDSA rehabilitation” remains a priority project, but its timeline has been adjusted to better serve the public.
In response to Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel’s inquiry about the President’s directive to delay the project for a month, Dizon emphasized, “It doesn’t mean it is cancelled. But the President really said that he listened to our countrymen for us to find a better way and a faster way (to finish the rehabilitation).” This highlights the administration’s commitment to completing the project efficiently while minimizing inconvenience.
President Marcos Aims to Accelerate EDSA Work
Secretary Dizon further revealed that President Marcos wants to shorten the rehabilitation period from two years to just six months. The goal is to finish the repairs quickly while ensuring that commuters and motorists experience minimal disruption. “He wants it done in a manner that it would not cause too much trouble to our countrymen passing EDSA,” Dizon explained.
Project Cost and Scope of EDSA Rehabilitation
Regarding the project’s budget, Dizon shared that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) estimates the costs to reach ₱8.7 billion by 2026. However, the total expenses may rise to ₱15 billion by the time the rehabilitation concludes in 2027. “As far as I know, and which is subject to verification by the DPWH, which is the lead agency handling the EDSA rehabilitation project, it is already in the advanced stage of procurement,” he noted, deferring detailed updates to the DPWH.
The rehabilitation includes reconstructing each lane and the middle lane, replacing the concrete base, and applying an asphalt overlay. Additionally, the project will address drainage systems and sidewalk repairs, aiming for a safer and more durable EDSA. These measures form part of a comprehensive plan to restore this major thoroughfare for the millions who rely on it daily.
