Education Secretary Sonny Angara Steps Down Amid Cabinet Shake-Up
Following a directive from President Marcos, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara officially tendered his resignation on Thursday, May 22. This move comes as part of a cabinet-wide courtesy resignation process initiated by the President.
“Today, I submitted my courtesy resignation as Secretary of the Department of Education, effective immediately,” Angara announced. “This decision aligns with the President’s directive for Cabinet-wide courtesy resignations.”
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that President Marcos requested these resignations as a strategic effort to recalibrate his administration following recent election results. Angara and other cabinet members have expressed their full support for this process.
“Binibigyang halaga at tiwala namin ang pasya ng Pangulo na paigtingin ang pamumuno at pamunuan niya,” Angara stated, emphasizing their trust in the President’s decision to strengthen leadership and governance.
Brief Tenure Marked by a Focused 5-Point Agenda
Angara’s appointment as Education Secretary was announced in early 2024, succeeding Vice President Sara Duterte, who stepped down the previous July. During his roughly ten months in office, he pursued a 5-Point Agenda targeting persistent and emerging challenges in basic education.
His agenda prioritized creating a supportive learning environment, improving teacher welfare, delivering efficient and diverse learning modalities, and preparing students for future workforce demands. Angara reflected on his time in office, saying, “Sa sampung buwan ko bilang Kalihim, nakiisa tayo sa adhikain ng Pangulo na iangat ang antas ng edukasyon, alagaan ang ating mga guro, at tiyakin ang pagkatuto ng ating mga mag-aaral.”
He described serving as Education Secretary as the “greatest honor” of his public service career. Angara also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work within the Cabinet, stating, “I extend my sincere gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in his Cabinet.”
Ensuring a Smooth Transition for Education Leadership
Looking ahead, Angara pledged to support a seamless handover to his successor. He emphasized the importance of uninterrupted progress within the Department of Education.
“The vital work of the Department must continue with no roadblocks,” he said, underscoring the need for continuity despite the leadership change.
Community leaders note that this transition period is critical to maintaining momentum on education reforms and protecting the welfare of teachers and students alike.
