The Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) on Sunday urged lawmakers to amend the Omnibus Election Code to better address election-related concerns. They emphasized the need for updates especially in light of new campaign methods, including online campaigning.
Addressing election-related concerns in new laws
Caritos hopes the 20th Congress will focus on revising election laws to keep pace with current campaign practices. She specifically suggested adding provisions for online elections and increasing the spending limit for candidates.
Currently, the Omnibus Election Code sets the campaign spending limit at one peso and fifty centavos per registered voter in the candidate’s constituency. Caritos also recommended establishing a contribution limit per candidate to ensure fairness.
Improving election-related concerns with better facilities
Another issue raised involves the Commission on Elections (Comelec) field offices. At present, these offices are housed within local government units, which Caritos believes could lead to conflicts of interest for Comelec personnel.
Therefore, she proposed creating separate Comelec facilities to enhance independence and trust in the election process.
LENTE’s monitoring of election-related concerns
As the May 12, 2025 election day approaches, LENTE is actively monitoring several aspects. These include the spread of disinformation online and ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and pregnant women.
Additionally, LENTE is keeping an eye on compliance with election rules, particularly during the canvassing of results, to promote transparency and integrity throughout the process.
