Election-related violence erupts in Basilan before polls

Election-related violence erupts in Basilan before polls

A female teacher assigned as an electoral board member in a Basilan school was shot by unidentified attackers on Sunday, just one day before the National and Local Elections (NLE). This shocking election-related violence has raised concerns over the safety of those involved in the electoral process.

According to Colonel Jay-Jay Javines, spokesperson for the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), the teacher was ambushed while riding a motorcycle from Lantawan, Isabela City earlier Sunday, May 11, 2025. The attack happened in Barangay Sumagdang, Isabela City, Basilan.

The teacher was set to serve at a school in Barangay Mangas, Lantawan during the upcoming election. Fortunately, she is now out of danger and receiving treatment in a hospital. The suspects remain unidentified as authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting.

Increased security for election-related violence

In response to the incident, WestMinCom has intensified security measures for electoral board members and individuals with election-related duties. Colonel Javines said, “The teachers will go with our security forces. We will have a convoy security, providing them with military escorts and military convoy aboard military vehicles.”

This shooting is separate from another violent episode in Barangay Langil Island, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, Basilan. WestMinCom reported an exchange of gunfire between supporters of rival political camps in the area.

Gunfight between rival camps

The conflict involved the group of mayoralty candidate Talib G. Pawaki of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) and supporters of Municipal Councilor aspirant Muhammad Hassan from the Basilan Unity Party (BUP). Preliminary information reveals that the firefight resulted in two confirmed deaths—one from each faction—and one wounded from Mayor Pawaki’s group.

Colonel Javines explained, “They were supposed to be there to prepare the precinct for tomorrow’s elections. They were fired upon unexpectedly. Fortunately, the mayor was protected by his bodyguard, and other members of his party responded, leading to the exchange of fire.”

Election-related violence will not stop elections

Despite these incidents, WestMinCom assures the public that the election will push through as scheduled with enhanced security in place. “As of now, the area is pacified and stable. The election will proceed tomorrow, and we have beefed up security in Barangay Langil. We have added more forces to secure the area,” said Colonel Javines.

He also confirmed that there is no plan to suspend the election despite the recent violence. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure a safe and peaceful election day in Basilan.

The election-related violence in Basilan highlights ongoing security challenges, but officials remain committed to protecting voters and election workers.
