Rep. Brian Poe Voices Concern Over Escalator Mishap
Rep. Brian Poe of the FPJ Panday Bayanihan Partylist expressed deep concern for the seven commuters injured in the escalator mishap at LRT-1’s FPJ Station on August 15, 2025. The incident highlights urgent issues surrounding commuter safety in public transportation.
“While it is a relief to learn that only one required hospital evaluation and was discharged within two hours, and that the six others received first-aid and returned home safely, this incident underscores a grave concern for commuter safety,” the lawmaker said. The escalator mishap at LRT-1 FPJ Station has raised questions about the reliability and security of daily transit systems trusted by millions.
Safety in Public Transit Must Be Prioritized
Poe emphasized that ensuring safety in public transit is non-negotiable. “It is unacceptable for daily commuters—students, workers, and ordinary Filipinos—to face risks in systems they trust and depend upon,” he noted. The incident serves as a stark reminder that public transportation facilities must be maintained with the highest standards to protect passengers.
Swift Response from Authorities
Officials reported that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) promptly directed the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) to assist the injured passengers and repair the escalator. The malfunctioning escalator was restored and declared safe for use by 10 a.m. the following day.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon underscored the importance of facility reliability at LRT-1. “The president has firmly instructed that passengers must feel confident that their train journeys are safe. I have ordered the LRMC to immediately provide assistance to the injured passengers and to promptly repair the broken escalator,” he said.
Call for Transparency and Accountability
While acknowledging the quick actions taken, local leaders urged a thorough and transparent investigation into the technical causes of the escalator failure. They stressed the need for independent scrutiny by DOTr, LRMC, and relevant regulatory bodies to restore public trust.
“Commuters deserve a full and credible account—not just of what happened, but of how we will prevent this from happening again,” Poe asserted. He reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing commuter safety and improving public transit systems nationwide.
Protecting Commuter Trust for the Future
Community members agreed that public trust and commuter protection must remain the highest priorities. The escalator mishap at LRT-1 FPJ Station serves as a critical wake-up call for authorities to strengthen safety protocols and maintenance practices.
Rep. Poe concluded by reiterating his commitment to championing policies and programs that ensure safer, more reliable public transportation for all Filipinos.
