EU High Representative Visits Philippines to Strengthen Relations

EU High Representative to Visit Philippines

The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission will visit the Philippines from June 1 to 2. This visit aims to further strengthen the relationship between the Philippines and the regional bloc. According to sources familiar with the matter, this will be her first trip to Manila since her appointment in December 2024.

The Department of Foreign Affairs described the visit as a key moment in diplomatic ties, underscoring shared goals of open political dialogue and cooperation for peace, stability, and sustainable development. The four-word keyphrase “further strengthen the relationship” captures the core purpose of her trip.

Meetings with Philippine Leaders

On June 2, the EU official is scheduled to meet with President Marcos and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. After their discussions, she will hold a press conference to share insights from their talks. The agenda includes addressing challenging regional and international issues, with an emphasis on enhancing Philippines-EU relations.

In addition to these high-level meetings, she will engage with other government officials, including the Philippine Coast Guard Commandant and the National Security Adviser. These discussions aim to broaden cooperation across security and defense sectors.

Engagement with Academic and Civil Society Groups

To foster deeper connections beyond government circles, the EU diplomat will meet with students from De La Salle University in a town hall setting. She will also hold discussions with representatives from civil society, highlighting the EU’s commitment to inclusive partnerships.

Regional Security and Prior Visit to Singapore

Prior to arriving in Manila, she will attend the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Asia’s premier defense summit. There, she is scheduled to deliver a speech titled “Ensuring Stability in a Competitive World” during the dialogue’s second plenary session.

While in Singapore, she will meet with top leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Defense Minister. These engagements reflect the EU’s focus on security and stability in the broader region.

Her visits to Singapore and the Philippines emphasize a coordinated approach to regional diplomacy amid ongoing global challenges. Sources indicate that such high-level interactions aim to build resilient partnerships that support peace and sustainable development.
