Ex-President Duterte Has No Plans to Sell Davao Home, Son Says
Former President Rodrigo Duterte has no plans to sell his home in Davao City despite a recent photo of the property showing a “for sale” sign circulating online. This clarification came from his son, Davao City 1st District Representative Paolo Duterte, who shared his father’s thoughts during an interview on a local Facebook page.
Representative Paolo Duterte revealed that he initially hesitated to bring up the issue with his father, given Duterte’s current state inside the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing it as “depressing.” When he asked the former president about selling their grandmother’s house, Duterte firmly said he would not sell or allow anyone to sell it.
He then directly asked about the Doña Luisa house, to which Duterte responded in Bisaya, “Why is it up for sale?” He emphasized that the house was his first home, and added that Honeylet Avanceña, his common-law wife, had her own large house.
Ownership and Family Support Amid ICC Detention
The younger Duterte explained that the title of the Davao property is registered under Honeylet Avanceña’s name. While his father’s answer about the house’s sale was unclear, Paolo said, “if the house was sold already, then we can’t do anything about it. But for now, our mom said that he can stay with us if he gets out of the ICC.” He also noted the family has other homes where the former president could stay.
Duterte’s Legal Situation and ICC Appeal
On June 12, former President Duterte formally appealed to the ICC for interim release to an undisclosed country, citing the willingness of a certain State Party to host him. However, the ICC prosecutors opposed this request and urged the tribunal’s Pre-Trial Chamber I to reject it.
Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang argued that Duterte’s continued detention is necessary to ensure his appearance at trial. Duterte currently faces charges for crimes against humanity due to alleged actions during his administration’s war on drugs. An arrest warrant was served to him on March 11, and he attended his pre-trial hearing via video call on March 14 from The Hague, Netherlands.
Background on Duterte’s Controversial Drug Campaign
Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, known as Oplan Tokhang, has been linked to thousands of deaths. Official reports estimate at least 6,000 deaths, but human rights organizations claim the number could be as high as 20,000. The campaign has drawn international attention and criticism for alleged human rights abuses.
