Fake Job Offer in Palawan Causes Stranding of Negros Residents
A fake job offer in Palawan left seven residents of Negros Occidental stranded and struggling for two months before a social media plea led to their rescue. The group, recruited for construction work, faced harsh conditions and no proper wages upon arrival, which made sending money home impossible.
Local community leaders said four of the workers came from Barangay Mansilingan in Bacolod City, two from Murcia town, and one from Binalbagan town. The group traveled to Palawan in March after responding to the job offer, hoping for stable employment.
Community Response and Safe Return
Upon discovering their situation through a social media post, a local representative quickly coordinated efforts to bring them home. The seven returned to Negros Occidental on May 26, arriving at the Bredco port after departing Palawan via Iloilo the day before.
The four Bacolod residents were warmly welcomed by Barangay Mansilingan Captain France Tionko. “They carried not only the weight of distance, but also the burden of being far from loved ones – enduring hardship in silence and holding on to hope when everything seemed uncertain,” community leaders shared.
Lessons from the Incident
This case highlights the dangers posed by fraudulent employment offers and the importance of community vigilance. It also underscores the power of social media in raising awareness and prompting swift action to assist victims of such scams.
