Family Conflict Turns Violent in Samboan Municipality
In a troubling incident in the Municipality of Samboan, southern Cebu, two individuals were attacked by a family member. The violent event unfolded in Barangay Calatagan on the evening of May 16, 2025.
The case involved a 30-year-old man who attacked his younger brother, Merlito, using a machete. Merlito suffered a severe wound to his jaw. Additionally, Merlito’s common-law wife, Belen, was also injured during the attack, sustaining a hit to the back of her head.
Triggering the Conflict: A Social Media Dispute
According to reports from local authorities, the incident began when Merlito visited their mother’s house to confront a post made by their sister on social media. The post had evidently upset the suspect, who demanded that Merlito stop addressing the matter. Tensions quickly escalated, leading to a heated argument between the brothers.
Following the confrontation, the suspect armed himself with a machete and violently assaulted Merlito. The attack also extended to Merlito’s live-in partner, who was struck during the altercation.
Suspect Surrenders to Authorities
After committing the crime, the suspect voluntarily turned himself in to the police. Authorities are currently handling the case and further investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances of the attack.
Community leaders have expressed concern over the violent outcome of what began as a family dispute, highlighting the need for peaceful conflict resolution.
