Filipino Businessman Arrested for Selling Banned Imported Poultry in Pasay
Authorities apprehended a Filipino businessman last Tuesday afternoon in Pasay City for allegedly selling banned imported poultry. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) reported the arrest during a raid at a minimart along Cartimar Avenue.
The suspect, identified only as “Zerjay,” was caught selling 20 boxes of poultry meat products that were imported from the People’s Republic of China. These included Peking duck, yellow chicken, blackened chicken, and frog meat.
Banned Products Linked to Health Risks
The Department of Agriculture had banned these poultry items due to the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus strains. These strains pose a serious threat because they can be transmitted to humans, raising public health concerns.
Legal Charges Filed Against the Suspect
Following the arrest, authorities filed charges against the suspect before the National Prosecution. The case involves violations of Republic Act 9296, known as the Meat Inspection Code, alongside provisions under RA 7394 or the Consumer Act. Local officials emphasized the importance of enforcing these laws to protect consumers from unsafe imported goods.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to curb the distribution of prohibited poultry products in the Philippines. The CIDG continues to monitor and conduct operations targeting illegal trade to safeguard public health.
