Filipino Leaders Welcome New Pope
Senators across the Philippines warmly welcomed the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new pope, now known as Pope Leo XIV. As the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, his role holds great significance for Filipinos, the only predominantly Christian nation in Asia.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV would inspire the country amid various challenges. “As the Philippines stands firm in its faith, I pray that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV may guide us as we face our nation’s trials,” he said.
Hope for Unity and Faith
Escudero described the new pope as a beacon of hope. “He represents not only Christendom but all humanity striving for peace, kindness, and harmony,” he added. “At a time when societies are divided and conflicts abound, we look to him to unite diverse communities and promote understanding.”
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Floor Leader Koko Pimentel highlighted the pope’s connection to the Philippines. “This moment will deepen the faith of many Filipinos,” he noted. “With the support of our Filipino cardinals, we hope for a stronger spiritual commitment nationwide.”
Calls for Spiritual Renewal and Justice
Senator Nancy Binay also expressed optimism, saying Pope Leo XIV could inspire Filipinos to return to their Christian roots. “In these uncertain times, many seek renewed spiritual guidance and moral clarity,” she said. “May his humble service encourage more to rediscover their faith.”
Senator Loren Legarda prayed that the American pontiff would champion social justice. “We hope Pope Leo XIV will defend human dignity, uplift the poor and vulnerable, and protect our common home,” she stated. “His leadership should be marked by courage and kindness amid today’s challenges.”
President Marcos Congratulates New Pontiff
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated Pope Leo XIV, expressing hope that the new pope would bring the Catholic Church closer to the poor. The 69-year-old Augustinian priest is the 267th pope, the first from the United States, and the second from the Americas after Pope Francis.
