Filipinos Urged to Foster Stronger Unity on Independence Day
As the Philippines marks its 127th Independence Day, calls for stronger unity among Filipinos echoed around the nation. Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, present at the Barasoain Church rites in Malolos, Bulacan, expressed confidence that Filipinos can overcome current challenges through cooperation and solidarity. The keyphrase “stronger unity among Filipinos” captures the essence of his message.
Despite ongoing political tensions, Escudero lamented the visible discord dividing the people. He warned that instead of coming together to build a better future, many seem more focused on political conflicts. “Instead of uniting towards a paradise that our countrymen aspire to, we are trying to fight with our fellow Filipinos whom we seem to love watching and experiencing,” he said in Filipino.
Unity as the Path to Progress
Escudero emphasized that unity is fundamental to progress, and harmony paves the way for meaningful change. He reminded everyone that true harmony involves combining the strengths of all Filipinos—young and old, educated or not, regardless of gender or appearance. With such unity, he believes no challenge is insurmountable.
Reflecting on the significance of the 127th anniversary since independence was declared in 1898, Escudero urged Filipinos to demonstrate political maturity. “Our country is old, more than a hundred years old. We no longer have reason to say that we are young and that we are just practicing,” he noted. He hopes that the nation can learn from history rather than repeat past mistakes, moving beyond strife and conflict toward shared values and unity.
Freedom and Responsibility: A Daily Commitment
Senator Loren Legarda also spoke during the Independence Day ceremonies held at Pamintuan Mansion in Angeles City, Pampanga. For her, freedom is not just a historical event but a continuous commitment to uphold values that protect the environment, advance education, preserve culture, and promote social equity.
“Freedom includes protecting the environment. The Philippines is one of the countries most at risk of disaster and the worsening climate crisis,” Legarda stated in her keynote address. She reminded the public that every storm and flood serves as a reminder that safeguarding nature is an essential part of the fight for freedom.
Challenges to True Independence
Meanwhile, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian highlighted the sacrifices made for sovereignty and the resilient spirit of Filipinos. However, he pointed out that genuine independence remains out of reach for many due to poverty, unemployment, and lack of education.
“As a nation, we must dedicate ourselves to overcoming these challenges to achieve greater freedom for every Filipino and a more prosperous life for future generations,” Gatchalian affirmed.
The voices of these leaders during the 127th Independence Day remind Filipinos that stronger unity among Filipinos is not only essential but achievable through collective effort and political maturity.
