Survey Results on Impeachment Case Spark Debate
Recent Pulse Asia surveys reveal that 50 percent of Filipinos oppose filing an impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. However, House of Representatives spokesperson Princess Abante cautions against reading too much into these numbers. During a chance interview with reporters on May 27, she pointed out a possible disconnect between survey findings and the true sentiments of the Filipino people.
Abante emphasized the need to be cautious when interpreting surveys, especially considering past election polls. She cited the senatoriables’ popularity surveys prior to the May 12 midterm elections, which failed to accurately predict the actual winners.
Lessons Learned from Past Surveys
“I would be very careful in reading too much right now on the surveys,” Abante said. “Siguro kung meron tayo natutunan ngayong eleksyon ay hindi naging tugma ang mga naging datos ng mga survey prior to elections doon sa actual na resulta.”
She explained that many candidates who consistently ranked high in surveys throughout the campaign ultimately did not win. Conversely, some “surprise victors” emerged despite lacking strong survey support.
Understanding the True Needs of the People
Abante stressed that surveys only capture feelings at a surface level. “We need to understand not just ano ‘yung pakiramdam ng mamamayan ayon sa survey pero mas kailangan bumaba tayo sa tao para mas maintindihan ano ‘yung talagang totoong pangangailangan nila,” she said. This means engaging directly with citizens to grasp their genuine concerns beyond what polling data shows.
