Filipinos Targeted in Racist Riots in Northern Ireland
Filipinos have been caught in the middle of racist riots in Northern Ireland, with one individual’s car set ablaze amid the unrest. The Philippine Embassy in London has expressed deep concern over the situation, urging vigilance and support for those affected.
The embassy issued an advisory on June 12, highlighting that Filipinos were among the migrants targeted during the violent riots. These disturbances were sparked by allegations of a sexual assault involving two Romanian teenagers. “The Philippine Embassy in London is deeply concerned about the racist riots in Northern Ireland, reportedly triggered by an alleged sexual assault of a young girl by two Romanian teenagers,” embassy officials said.
Filipinos Among Those Targeted in the Riots
Unfortunately, innocent Filipinos have been caught in the crossfire. One Filipino resident had their vehicle set on fire during the chaos. “Unfortunately, in the ensuing unrest, Filipinos in the area have been targeted. The vehicle of one was set on fire. It is regrettable that innocent individuals have been caught in the crossfire,” the embassy added.
Despite the violent acts, no Filipinos were physically harmed. Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega shared in an interview that around ten Filipinos are currently being sheltered by Filipino families in the area. “So, right now, may sampung Filipino na inaalagaan ng ibang Filipino families, remember apektado pero walang physical injuries ang mga Filipino ngayon,” he said.
Diplomatic Response and Safety Measures
Ambassador Teddy Locsin is planning a visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to assess the situation firsthand and ensure the safety of Filipinos living there. “We will wait his report baka may mga litrato siya ganyan kasama ng iba. Walang napinsala, walang mismong in-attack physically, walang body hard. So, we’ll continue to hope for the best and update you,” De Vega added.
Northern Ireland hosts approximately 5,000 Filipinos, with around 100 residing in Ballymena, the town at the center of the riots. The embassy is closely monitoring developments and maintaining contact with local authorities to ensure the welfare of Filipinos. They have also urged all Filipinos in Ballymena and nearby areas to stay alert, heed local officials’ advice, and reach out for help if needed.
The embassy remains committed to the safety of Filipinos abroad and will provide assistance as situations evolve.
