Fire Inspectors to Use Body Cameras
MANILA, Philippines — Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced a new measure requiring fire inspectors to wear body cameras. This move aims to curb the illegal selling of fire extinguishers, a problem that has long plagued the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
“I’ve already filed for the requisition of 5,000 body cams. Then, we’ll be having a system because our fire inspectors are very notorious in selling fire extinguishers,” Remulla said during a recent radio interview.
Crackdown on Illegal Fire Extinguisher Sales
The BFP, an agency under the Department of the Interior and Local Government, has been enforcing Memorandum Circular No. 2025-005. This circular prohibits personnel from endorsing or selling specific brands of fire extinguishers and firefighting equipment.
Local officials noted that despite this, some inspectors continue to engage in unauthorized sales, undermining public trust and safety.
Ensuring Transparency and Accountability
Secretary Remulla emphasized that the introduction of body cameras will dismantle corrupt practices. “All their conversations, all their inspections, they should all be recorded,” he stressed.
He added, “I will personally check if the brands of the fire extinguishers are all the same. I’ll put these fire inspectors in their place.” This hands-on approach signals a firm stance against corruption within the fire protection service.
Looking Ahead
Community leaders expressed support for the plan, believing that the body camera system will promote transparency and improve the integrity of fire inspections nationwide.
As the Department moves forward with this initiative, the public can expect stricter monitoring and enforcement to ensure safety standards are met without compromise.
