First Lady Backs Marcos Call to End Corruption
MANILA, Philippines — First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos strongly supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call to end corruption, stressing that the move is long overdue. She emphasized this in a social media post, where she expressed hope that the appeal would stop people from exploiting her name to push their selfish and corrupt agendas.
“I fully support the President’s call for honesty and integrity among public officials. It’s long overdue!” she declared. “Let this be the beginning of real accountability — and the end of people misusing my name to advance their selfish & corrupt agendas,” she added.
Araneta-Marcos also highlighted that “enough is enough,” reminding everyone that public service is a privilege, not a business to be exploited.
Controversies Surround First Lady Amid Corruption Crackdown
Recently, the first lady’s name was linked to the death of businessman Juan Paolo “Paowee” Tantoco in Los Angeles, California, last March. This stirred speculations, especially after she missed the President’s official visit to the United States this month. Despite these rumors, she remains firm in supporting the anti-corruption drive.
President Marcos Details Corruption’s Toll on Public Projects
In his fourth State of the Nation Address, the President lamented the poor execution of many flood control projects. He attributed the widespread flooding during the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, and recent typhoons to these failures.
He boldly stated, “Wag na po tayong magkunwari. Alam naman ng buong madla na nagkakaraket sa mga proyekto. Mga kickback, initiative, errata, SOP, ‘for the boys,’” referring to corrupt officials and contractors involved in these projects.
He warned those involved in stealing national funds for selfish gains, saying, “Mahiya naman kayo sa mga kabahayan nating naanod o nalubog sa baha. Mahiya naman kayo lalo sa mga anak natin na magmamana sa mga utang na ginawa ninyo, na binulsa niyo lang ang pera.” (Have some shame for the countrymen who were swept away or submerged by the floods. Have even more shame for our children who will inherit the debts you created, money that you simply pocketed.)
