Fisherman Discovers P19.3 Million Worth of Cocaine in Eastern Samar
A 52-year-old fisherman from Barangay Carmen made a startling discovery when he found P19.3 million worth of cocaine floating off the coast of Hernani, Eastern Samar. The 3.64-kilogram haul was recovered on a Thursday morning, officials reported on Friday.
The fisherman was casting his nets at around 11:45 a.m. when he noticed several tightly wrapped packages drifting in the sea. Suspecting the items to be illegal drugs, he promptly brought them ashore and reported the find to the Hernani Municipal Police Station by 12:10 p.m., community members said.
Police and Local Officials Secure the Illegal Drugs
Authorities swiftly coordinated with barangay officials to secure the six packages containing the suspected substance. The seized items were then sent to the Regional Crime Laboratory in Palo, Leyte, for further examination, sources noted.
By Friday, forensic tests confirmed the packages contained cocaine weighing exactly 3,643.422 grams. This significant bust highlights the ongoing efforts to intercept dangerous drugs before they reach communities.
Police Commend Fisherman’s Vigilance
Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8) Director Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy praised the fisherman’s quick thinking and decisive action. He emphasized that this case exemplifies the power of effective police-community cooperation.
“Through timely reporting and cooperation between residents and our police personnel, we can intercept dangerous substances before they pose a threat to our people,” Capoy said in a statement, local leaders reported.
Follow-Up Investigations Underway
Authorities have launched follow-up investigations to trace the origin of the contraband. Officials aim to determine whether this recent cocaine find is linked to previous discoveries of cocaine bricks in Eastern Visayas waters.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time fishermen in Eastern Samar have recovered floating cocaine. In 2024, a fisherman from Barangay Tangbo, Arteche, retrieved over 21 kilograms of cocaine valued at P111.85 million, which was subsequently turned over to the authorities, sources recalled.
Community Urged to Stay Vigilant
PRO-8 continues to remind the public of their vital role in maintaining peace and security. Residents are urged to report any suspicious items or activities immediately to the nearest police station. This shared responsibility is key to safeguarding the region from the dangers of illegal drugs, officials reported.
