Fishermen Recover Floating Shabu in West Philippine Sea
MARIVELES, Bataan – Fishermen made a remarkable discovery when they found floating shabu worth P1.5 billion in the West Philippine Sea near Masinloc, Zambales. This valuable contraband was retrieved on Thursday, May 29, and handed over to authorities on Monday, June 2.
The fishermen, who spotted the suspicious sacks drifting at sea, immediately reported and delivered the illegal drugs to law enforcement agencies. The recovered shabu was packed in 222 assorted vacuum-sealed transparent plastic packs, each weighing approximately one kilogram.
Authorities Praise Fishermen’s Vigilance
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Regional Office 3 commended the fishermen for their responsible actions. They emphasized the importance of community participation in combating illegal drug activities. Local officials noted the fishermen’s courage in turning over the banned substance instead of keeping it.
Investigations Underway to Trace Origins
Authorities are now working to determine the source of the seized shabu. Forensic examination and confirmation are currently being conducted at the PDEA-Central Luzon laboratory. These tests aim to provide critical information about the shipment’s origin and its distribution network.
“The PDEA will continuously monitor all suspicious activities and remain steadfast in its commitment to eradicating drug smuggling in Central Luzon,” said a spokesperson from PDEA-Central Luzon.
With this incident, the agency reinforces its vow to strengthen maritime and coastal surveillance against drug trafficking in the region.
Community Cooperation Remains Vital
This case underscores the vital role of ordinary citizens in the fight against illegal drugs. The fishermen’s decision to report and surrender the shabu illustrates how community vigilance can assist authorities in dismantling dangerous drug operations.
As investigations continue, authorities urge everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious activities immediately. Their collective efforts are crucial to securing the safety and well-being of communities across Central Luzon and beyond.
