Fishermen Surrender P312M Shabu Found Along Coast
Two fishermen bravely surrendered illegal drugs worth around P312.8 million they discovered floating along the Claveria, Cagayan coastline, authorities confirmed Sunday, June 15. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) praised their honesty and urged the public to stay vigilant against drug syndicates’ tactics.
PDEA Director General Isagani Nerez revealed the seized shabu was packed in 50 plastic bundles wrapped in gold tea bags marked with the label ‘DAGUANYIN’ and Chinese characters. “It is clear that public vigilance can be one of our strongest defenses against any evil ploys of drug syndicates,” Nerez said, commending the fishermen for their courage.
Multiple Recoveries Show Growing Effort
Just two days earlier, local authorities recovered about one kilogram of shabu worth P6.8 million floating near Sitio Narvacan, Barangay Dilam, Calayan, Cagayan during a maritime patrol. Later the same day, another fisherman and a barangay kagawad surrendered 750 grams of shabu valued at P5.1 million found floating at Sitio Mingay, Barangay San Juan, Sta. Praxedes, Cagayan.
“The swift and coordinated response of the law enforcement teams ensured the safe retrieval and proper documentation of these substances,” officials noted.
Integrity of Fishermen Praised Nationwide
All confiscated shabu packs were immediately handed over to the PDEA Regional Office II Laboratory for thorough qualitative and quantitative tests. The fishermen and barangay kagawad involved received praise for promptly reporting their discoveries, showcasing integrity amid the ongoing drug problem.
Local leaders highlighted that fisherfolk from Zambales, Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, and now Cagayan are setting examples of honesty in their communities by surrendering such finds.
Authorities Intensify Maritime Patrols
An in-depth investigation is underway to trace the origin and intended recipients of the seized drugs. Surveillance and maritime patrols across Northern Luzon’s coastlines have been intensified to prevent illegal drugs from entering the country by sea.
PDEA also calls on citizens to stay alert and report suspicious activities, reinforcing community participation in the fight against illegal drugs.
