Five Negros Occidental Gov’t Workers Test Positive for Illegal Drugs
BACOLOD CITY – Five job order (JO) workers employed by the Negros Occidental provincial government recently tested positive for illegal drug use. This latest development has raised concerns about maintaining a drug-free workplace within the provincial government.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz announced on Thursday, June 19, that the drug test results have already been sent to the Provincial Legal Office. The office will now proceed with issuing the appropriate notices to the individuals involved.
Policy on Drug-Positive Workers
Diaz emphasized that as a strict policy, JO and contract of service (COS) workers who test positive for illegal drugs will not be rehired. Their contracts are set to expire on July 1 and will not be renewed. This measure aims to uphold a safe and productive workplace environment.
“The routine drug testing is part of the campaign to maintain a drug free workplace at the provincial capitol,” Diaz explained. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring employees remain free from substance abuse.
Procedures for Regular Employees
In contrast to JO and COS workers, regular employees who test positive are required to undergo rehabilitation. They may only return to work once they have successfully completed their treatment and have recovered.
On Monday, June 16, a total of 1,878 employees—including regular, JO, and COS workers—participated in the drug testing conducted after the flag-raising ceremony. The results are part of ongoing efforts to keep the provincial government workforce clean and responsible.
Local leaders noted that maintaining a drug-free environment helps promote efficiency and trust within government operations. The strict enforcement of this policy also reflects a broader campaign against illegal drugs in the region.
