Five New People’s Army Rebels Killed in Northern Samar
TACLOBAN CITY – Five New People’s Army rebels were killed in fierce gunbattles with government forces in Catubig, Northern Samar. These deadly encounters unfolded over several days, highlighting the ongoing conflict in the area.
The recent clashes involved government troops pursuing rebel fighters in Barangay Nagoocan on June 5. During one intense encounter, a communist rebel was killed while a soldier sustained injuries but is now reported to be in stable condition. The 8th Infantry Division confirmed five rebels died in the gunfights that began on June 3.
Recovery of Military Equipment
Troops seized several weapons from the rebels, including a Ultimax squad automatic weapon, an M16 rifle, and an Uzi submachine gun. Authorities are investigating whether these firearms were originally issued to government forces and later taken by the rebels.
Major General Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of the 8th Infantry Division, expressed his condolences to the family of the fallen soldier. He also stressed the critical importance of recovering government-issued equipment used by the New People’s Army to disrupt communities and spread violence.
“This retrieval is regarded by the Philippine Army as a significant step in regaining control over critical government property and denying the CNTs the use of military assets to pursue their interests,” Orio said.
Ongoing Efforts to Secure Northern Samar
The military continues to intensify operations against the New People’s Army in the region. Local leaders noted the importance of these efforts to restore peace and security for residents affected by the violence.
These recent encounters mark a crucial phase in the government’s campaign to dismantle rebel forces and prevent them from destabilizing communities.
