Five Rebels Killed During Northern Samar Pursuit Operation
TACLOBAN CITY – In a tense encounter on June 4, five communist rebels were killed during a pursuit operation in Barangay Nagoocan, Catubig, Northern Samar. The 8th Infantry Division led the operation after a clash with the New People’s Army, resulting in one rebel fatality and a soldier wounded but now stable.
The pursuit operation targeted communist rebels who have been active in the area. “This retrieval is regarded by the Philippine Army as a significant step in regaining control over critical government property and denying the CNTs the use of military assets to pursue their interests,” Major Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of the 8th ID, said. He also expressed condolences to the family of the fallen soldier.
Weapons Seized From Communist Rebels
During the encounter, troops recovered several firearms, including a Ultimax squad automatic weapon, an M16 rifle, and an Uzi submachine gun. Authorities are currently investigating whether these weapons were originally issued to government forces and later taken by the rebels.
The recovery of these government-issued arms is crucial in preventing further violence in local communities. Local leaders noted that denying rebel groups access to military equipment disrupts their capacity to destabilize the region.
Soldier’s Condition and Ongoing Investigations
The wounded soldier is reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care. Meanwhile, the military continues its investigation to determine the origin of the weapons and to track down other rebel elements in the area.
This latest pursuit operation underscores the ongoing efforts by government forces to suppress insurgent activities and restore peace in Northern Samar. The 8th Infantry Division remains committed to securing communities from armed groups.
