Filipino Priest Flavio Villanueva Honored
Flavio “Flavie” Villanueva, a Filipino priest known for assisting families of drug war victims, has been named one of the 2025 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees. This prestigious recognition highlights his relentless dedication to human rights amidst the ongoing challenges related to the war on drugs.
The announcement came on August 31, 2025, coinciding with the 118th birth anniversary of former President Ramon Magsaysay, the award’s namesake, according to officials involved in the ceremony.
Championing Families of Drug War Victims
Villanueva’s work as a human rights defender gained prominence after he was charged with sedition in 2019. Despite legal challenges, he continued to support families who lost loved ones to alleged extrajudicial killings during the controversial drug crackdown under former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Community members noted that Villanueva’s advocacy has provided a voice for those affected by the violence, offering legal aid and moral support to grieving families.
International Recognition for Human Rights Work
In 2021, Villanueva became the first Filipino recipient of the Human Rights Tulip Award, given by the government of the Netherlands. This international accolade recognized his unwavering commitment to defending drug war victims and promoting justice.
Other 2025 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees
Alongside Villanueva, the 2025 Ramon Magsaysay Award honored two other recipients. Shaahina Ali from the Maldives was recognized as the first Filipina-Maldivian marine conservationist, noted for her efforts combating plastic pollution in marine environments.
Additionally, India’s nonprofit organization “Educate Girls” received the award for mobilizing communities to enhance education access for girls in rural and marginalized areas. Local leaders praised the group’s impact on improving educational opportunities in underserved regions.
