Floating shabu recovered in Ilocos Norte
Another floating shabu valued at P6.8 million was seized in the West Philippine Sea, off the coast of Ilocos Norte. This discovery happened just a day after a similar haul was found nearby, highlighting ongoing efforts against illegal drugs in the region.
The 49-year-old fisherman who made the find was gathering firewood along the shore of Barangay Callaguip, Paoay, early morning on June 13. While at the seashore around 6:30 a.m., he spotted a suspicious package marked with durian images and Chinese characters. Without hesitation, he immediately reported the discovery to local authorities.
Authorities confirm shabu haul
Officials from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Ilocos Norte swiftly examined the package. Their tests confirmed that it contained one kilogram of shabu, priced at approximately P6.8 million on the black market. Police Colonel Frederick E. Obar, the local police director, noted the fisherman’s quick action helped prevent the drugs from circulating.
This incident followed the recovery of another shabu pack in Barangay Pangil, Currimao, on June 12, signaling a pattern of drug shipments arriving via the sea. Local leaders and law enforcement continue to intensify patrols and monitoring to intercept these illegal deliveries.
Community vigilance aids drug interdiction
The community’s vigilance plays a crucial role in combating drug smuggling. Residents like the fisherman who reported the package demonstrate how local awareness and cooperation with authorities can disrupt drug networks. “Hindi tayo papayag na mapunta dito ang droga,” a barangay official said, emphasizing their commitment.
Authorities urge residents to stay alert and report any suspicious items found along the coastline. These collective efforts aim to keep the region safe and drug-free.
