Flood Control Projects Reveal Mismatch in Philippines

Top Stories Today: Flood Control Projects in Focus

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. raised concerns about a significant mismatch between the country’s most flood-prone provinces and those receiving the highest number of flood control projects. This discrepancy highlights urgent issues in disaster risk management across the Philippines.

During a press briefing, Marcos shared data from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) listing the top 10 provinces with the most flood control projects. The list includes Bulacan with 668 projects, Cebu with 414, and Isabela with 341. Other provinces such as Pangasinan, Pampanga, and Albay also featured prominently.

Flood Control Projects: Provinces with the Most Initiatives

  • Bulacan – 668 projects
  • Cebu – 414 projects
  • Isabela – 341 projects
  • Pangasinan – 313 projects
  • Pampanga – 292 projects
  • Albay – 273 projects
  • Leyte – 262 projects
  • Tarlac – 258 projects
  • Camarines Sur – 252 projects
  • Ilocos Norte – 224 projects

Officials noted that while some provinces bear the brunt of flooding, the distribution of flood control projects does not always align with vulnerability, prompting calls for a more data-driven approach to disaster preparedness.

West Philippine Sea Tensions Escalate

A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel recently avoided a water cannon attack by the China Coast Guard near Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal. The BRP Suluan (MRV 4406) was on a mission supporting Filipino fishermen in the contested waters, local authorities reported.

In a related incident, a Chinese Coast Guard ship pursuing a PCG vessel collided with a Chinese Navy warship approximately 10.5 nautical miles east of Panatag Shoal. The PCG responded promptly by offering assistance to the involved parties, according to spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela.
