Magalong Open to Flood Control Works Probe Participation
Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon expressed his openness to Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong joining the independent commission investigating corrupt flood control projects. This flood control works probe has drawn significant attention due to alleged irregularities in government projects.
“I personally would welcome this development if true, because the Mayor (Magalong) has been at the forefront of this. He and other officials have been speaking about it for a long time,” Dizon said in Filipino during an event in Subic Bay Freeport, where he was present alongside President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., sources said.
Shift Toward Independent Investigation
Initially, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) formed an internal committee to investigate officials linked to the flood control works probe. However, Dizon emphasized his belief that an organization should not investigate itself.
“I don’t believe an organization should investigate itself; I don’t think that’s right,” he stated. Officials reported that this sentiment aligns with the President’s push for an independent commission to lead the investigations.
Respecting Presidential Wisdom
Dizon urged the public and stakeholders to respect the decision of the President to entrust the investigation to an independent body. “Let’s respect the wisdom of our President. Let’s give the independent commission the responsibility and authority to investigate,” he said.
Community members noted that this approach aims to ensure transparency and impartiality in uncovering the truth behind the flood control works probe.
Continuing Efforts and Coordination
While the independent commission takes charge, Dizon assured that all findings from the current internal investigation will be shared with the new investigative body. Department sources confirmed that the DPWH continues to gather relevant information with the new team in place to support the probe.
This collaborative effort signals the government’s commitment to addressing corruption and improving flood control infrastructure for the benefit of affected communities.
