Flooded Roads in Metro Manila Persist Amid Heavy Rains

Flooded Roads in Metro Manila Continue to Challenge Commuters

Metro Manila’s flooded roads remain a major concern as continuous rains brought by the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, persistently submerge key areas. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported that as of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, several streets across the capital are still under water, disrupting daily travel and transport.

Heavy rain and the effects of Tropical Storm Crising have intensified the habagat, leading to widespread flooding in many parts of the metropolis. Local authorities urge drivers and commuters to exercise caution while navigating these flooded roads in Metro Manila.

Flooded Roads in City of Manila

In the City of Manila, numerous streets remain submerged. Areas such as Recto Benavidez, España Lacson (both westbound and eastbound), and Rizal Avenue Fugoso experience water levels reaching gutter depth, but they remain passable to all vehicle types. Meanwhile, Taft Avenue at the corner of UN Avenue and near the Philippine General Hospital has knee-deep water, making these routes impassable for some vehicles.

Other affected Manila roads include Roxas Boulevard Kalaw northbound, Quirino Avenue Guazon, and Kalaw Taft, all with gutter-deep water but still accessible to most vehicles. However, the Esplanade tunnel leading to Intramuros is knee-deep in water and is not passable for all vehicles.

Flood Status in Pasay and Other Cities

Pasay City reports knee-deep flooding along Diokno Boulevard near the Senate area, which is not passable to all vehicles. Andrews Avenue in Barangay 185 and Edsa Heritage both have gutter-deep water but remain accessible to most traffic.

Flooded roads in Metro Manila also affect areas in Navotas, Malabon, Parañaque, and Mandaluyong, although specific details vary by location. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and provide updates to ensure public safety.

Weather Outlook and Storm Activity

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Metro Manila is forecasted to experience heavy to intense rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 millimeters on Wednesday due to the habagat. The intense rains will likely sustain or worsen flooding across the region.

Additionally, Tropical Depression Dante is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next 12 hours, which could further enhance the southwest monsoon’s effects. Dante was last tracked approximately 880 kilometers east of northern Luzon, moving northwest at 25 kilometers per hour with sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts reaching 70 kph.

Pagasa is also closely watching a low-pressure area over the coastal waters of Calayan, Cagayan. This system has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, potentially bringing more rain to the region.

Authorities urge residents and motorists to stay informed about the latest weather advisories and road conditions. Taking necessary precautions remains crucial to stay safe during this period of heavy rains and flooding.
