Floodwaters Reach Plugged-In Cord: Tragic Electrocution in Bulacan

A 28-year-old man and his dog tragically died after floodwaters reached a plugged-in extension cord inside their home in Hagonoy, Bulacan. This heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, when rising water from a high tide entered their residence.

The victim, identified as Gene Darel Aguilar from Barangay San Isidro, was sleeping with his pet dog when the riverside water suddenly surged. According to the victim’s mother, they did not expect the tide to rise enough to reach the electrical cord near his bed. Local sources said the extension cord, still connected to a power source, became submerged and caused electrocution.

Immediate Rescue Efforts and Investigation

Gene’s brother found him unresponsive beside the lifeless dog and quickly called for help. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. Police investigations confirmed that the electrical cord was plugged in close to where Gene was sleeping. It appears he underestimated the danger posed by the rising water levels.

Authorities noted that at the time of the incident, Gene was alone in the house. The family believes this tragic accident highlights the ongoing risks posed by flooding in their community.

Longstanding Flooding Problems Demand Solutions

Residents of Barangay San Isidro have long dealt with frequent flooding, especially during high tides or heavy rains. Gene’s mother appealed to both national and local governments, urging them to provide permanent solutions to the persistent flooding problem.

The village chief, Nene Balatbat, also emphasized the urgent need for durable flood defenses. Local leaders noted that constructing a strong barrier or dike could help protect the community from similar dangers in the future.

Safety Warnings for Residents Near Flooded Areas

Authorities reminded residents living near rivers and low-lying zones to exercise extreme caution during floods or high tides. They warned that floodwaters can become deadly conductors of electricity, especially when electrical cords or wiring are exposed or damaged.

The community’s experience serves as a grim reminder of the hidden dangers that floodwaters bring. Vigilance and proactive safety measures are crucial to prevent further tragedies.
