Former Philippine National Police Chief Speaks on Removal

Former Philippine National Police Chief Addresses Supporters

Former Philippine National Police chief, Gen. Nicolas Torre III, urged his supporters not to pity him after his sudden removal from the top police post earlier this week. In a heartfelt video message posted on his official social media account, Torre emphasized his resilience despite the unexpected change.

“Thank you to those who pity me, but I ask of you: do not pity me. In spite of my abrupt removal as Chief of the Philippine National Police, I am okay,” Torre said, blending Filipino and English in his remarks. He stressed that the real concern should be the millions of Filipinos who suffer from ongoing flooding rather than himself.

Focus Should Remain on Citizens Affected by Flooding

“If we must pity anyone, it should be the millions of our fellow citizens who repeatedly become victims to persistent flooding,” Torre stated. “They are the ones who truly need help and support at this time because they should not be the ones always suffering during the rainy season.” His message highlighted the urgent need for assistance to those affected by natural disasters.

Context Behind His Removal

Gen. Torre was relieved from his position by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last Tuesday. Sources reported that the dismissal followed a disagreement between Torre and the National Police Commission (Napolcom) regarding his appointment of 13 third-level officials within the police force.

Despite his removal, officials confirmed that President Marcos offered Torre another role within the government. However, Torre’s decision on this offer has yet to be disclosed.

Gen. Torre’s Perspective on the Situation

“I’ll repeat that I do not have ill feelings toward the president. I understand that he needs to make tough decisions and my removal as Chief of the Philippine National Police is only one of them,” Torre remarked. He affirmed his continued commitment to serve the country as a police officer.

“I am still a police officer. I serve and I still continue to serve at the pleasure of the president and our country,” he added, underscoring his dedication to public service despite recent changes.

New Acting Chief Appointed

Following Torre’s departure, former PNP Deputy Chief for Administration, Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., was appointed as the acting chief of the Philippine National Police. He officially assumed the role last Tuesday to ensure continuity in the agency’s leadership.
