Four Arrested for Illegal Small-Scale Mining in Catanduanes

Four individuals were apprehended on Wednesday afternoon for illegal small-scale mining operations in Baras town, Catanduanes, local authorities said Thursday. The suspects allegedly violated the People’s Small-Scale Mining Act of 1991, also known as Republic Act No. 7076.

The arrested individuals—Leonito Beo Mutya, 55; Sharon Reyes Mutya, 44; Jesus Vargas Mutya, 59; and Henidina Tolentino Mutya, 55—are residents of Barangay Dugui Too. They were caught in the act around 5 p.m. in Sitio Dalagangan, Barangay Agban, in Baras town.

Illegal Small-Scale Mining Charges Filed

Police Lieutenant Colonel Maria Luisa Calubaquib reported that the suspects failed to present any permits or legal documents authorizing their mining activities in the area. “They were caught red-handed conducting illegal mining operations,” she said.

Authorities are now preparing charges against the suspects for violating RA 7076. The four remain under police custody as investigations continue.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing mining regulations in remote communities. Local leaders noted the importance of vigilant monitoring to protect natural resources and uphold the law.
