Explore Free Museum of a History of Ideas Visits in August
Are you looking to enrich your cultural itinerary? The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) invites the public to enjoy free entrance to its Museum of a History of Ideas every Wednesday throughout August. This special offer marks the celebration of the nation’s “Buwan ng Wika” and “Buwan ng Kasaysayan.”
Celebrating Filipino Heritage and Language
Officials reported that this year’s “Buwan ng Kasaysayan” carries the theme “Diwa ng Kasaysayan, Kabilin sa Kabataan,” which translates to “Spirit of History, Legacy to the Youth.” Meanwhile, the “Buwan ng Wika” theme is “Paglinang sa Filipino at Katutubong Wika: Makasaysayan sa Pagkakaisa ng Bansa,” emphasizing the cultivation of Filipino and indigenous languages as a historic foundation for national unity.
UP Manila’s Historical Role in Nation Building
Local leaders noted that the University of the Philippines’ history is deeply intertwined with the country’s story, especially during the early 20th century. A community post in Filipino highlighted, “The history of the University of the Philippines is tied to the narrative of the country, especially in the first two decades of the 20th century. Until now, the UP continues to produce events that will shape the country’s future.”
Furthermore, the university’s commitment to promoting Filipino language and literature is well recognized. Anthropologist Henry Otley Beyer, the first chairperson of UP’s Department of Anthropology, pioneered the teaching of Philippine languages. This initiative responded to a growing cultural awareness among Filipinos, officials explained.
