DOTr Launches Free Rides Program in Cebu
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board have introduced the free rides program on the Urgello-Parkmall route in Cebu. This initiative marks the first implementation of the free rides program in the Visayas region.
The free rides program in Cebu operates daily from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Passengers can enjoy this service starting every Wednesday, with the program set to continue until 2028, according to sources.
Significant Benefits for Passengers and Drivers
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the program’s positive impact, especially for students and the more than 400 drivers and operators involved. Thanks to the Service Contracting Program, drivers no longer need to chase boundaries to earn income.
“President Marcos has repeatedly said that we should make the lives of our countrymen easier. The Free Ride Program here in Cebu is a way for the government to save on their daily expenses and use the savings on other things like food or medicine,” Dizon shared in Filipino.
He also highlighted that the program encourages more Filipinos to use public transport by providing a reliable and affordable commuting option.
Government Support and Expansion Plans
Authorities allocated approximately ₱125 million to fund free rides for one year on the Urgello-Parkmall route, which serves around 20,000 passengers daily. Local officials also revealed plans to expand the program to other routes in Cebu, including the Talisay-IT Park route, popular among call center workers.
Upcoming Free Rides in Mindanao
In addition to Cebu, free rides for public utility buses will launch in Davao this Thursday, marking the first such program in Mindanao. This expansion reflects the government’s commitment to ease transportation burdens nationwide.
