Fuel Subsidy for PUVs Covers All Drivers
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has confirmed that all public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators, whether consolidated or not, are eligible to receive fuel subsidies from the government. This inclusive approach aims to ease the burden caused by the recent sharp rise in oil prices triggered by conflicts in the Middle East.
The DOTr emphasized that the fuel subsidy program will benefit both consolidated and unconsolidated PUVs. “Drivers or operators do not have to be consolidated to receive the fuel subsidy. The government wants the program to be inclusive, especially since the entire sector will feel the impact of the increase in crude oil — consolidated or not,” officials said.
Government Coordinates for Swift Subsidy Distribution
To facilitate the timely release of assistance, the DOTr is collaborating with several agencies, including the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, and Landbank of the Philippines. This joint effort aims to accelerate support for PUV drivers and operators affected by the fuel price hike.
The DOTr assured the public that the subsidy distribution will be expedited following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive. “The subsidy is expected to be released as soon as possible in accordance with… President (Ferdinand Marcos Jr.)’s order to expedite its distribution,” the DOTr stated.
Oil Price Hikes and Impact on PUV Sector
The Department of Energy recently reported that local oil companies agreed to stagger the implementation of fuel price increases amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran. This strategy aims to mitigate the immediate effects of rising petroleum costs on consumers.
In response to the escalating conflict, the Philippine government raised the alert level in Israel and Iran to Alert Level 3. This signals that all Filipinos overseas in these countries are advised to return home promptly.
Traditional and Modern Jeepneys Remain Vital
Traditional and modern jeepneys continue to play a significant role in meeting the country’s transportation needs, serving millions of commuters daily. The fuel subsidy is expected to help drivers and operators maintain affordable fares for passengers despite the rising costs of fuel.
