GCash Commits to BSP Online Gambling Directive
GCash, a leading e-wallet platform, has pledged full compliance with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) directive to remove all links and icons connecting payment apps to online gambling platforms. This move reflects a shared commitment to responsible digital financial services and protecting Filipino users’ welfare.
“Once we receive the official directive, we will immediately enforce the necessary changes to ensure compliance and safeguard our users,” GCash representatives said, emphasizing swift action once the formal order is received.
BSP Orders E-Wallets to Unlink Gambling Features
During a Senate hearing, BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan revealed that all e-wallet companies must unlink their platforms from online gambling sites within 48 hours starting August 14. This includes removing in-app features or links facilitating e-gambling transactions.
While the directive prohibits direct gambling links within apps, users can still place bets by accessing e-gambling websites independently, officials noted.
Calls for a Comprehensive Online Gambling Ban
Before the close of the 19th Congress, several senators urged the government to impose a total ban on online gambling in the Philippines. They cited the negative impacts on many Filipinos, especially the youth, who are vulnerable to gambling addiction.
Although President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. did not address online gambling in his recent State of the Nation Address, the Palace confirmed that he is closely monitoring the growing issue of Filipino gambling addiction.
Protecting Filipinos from Gambling Harms
This directive by the BSP and compliance by platforms like GCash mark significant steps toward safeguarding Filipinos from the risks associated with online gambling. Community leaders and financial watchdogs have long advocated for such measures to ensure digital financial services are not exploited for harmful activities.
As the landscape of digital payments evolves, continued vigilance and cooperation between regulators and service providers remain vital to protect vulnerable populations.
