Gilas Pilipinas Youth Clinches Gold Medal Victory
House Speaker Martin Romualdez praised Barangay Ginebra star and Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legend LA Tenorio for leading the Gilas Pilipinas Youth team to a gold medal at the FIBA Under-16 Asia Cup Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) qualifiers. Tenorio, 40, served as the head coach of the national youth team that went undefeated in the tournament held in Indonesia.
Romualdez emphasized Tenorio’s leadership, especially since this was the coach’s first international coaching experience. He noted how Tenorio successfully shaped the young team into a united and competitive squad. “This is how we build a winning culture — through structure, accountability, and hard work,” said the Speaker of the 306-member House of Representatives.
LA Tenorio’s Impact on the Emerging Team
A former point guard from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Tenorio is an eight-time PBA champion and holds the league record for most consecutive games played at 744. His transition from player to coach has brought a fresh perspective to the youth team, which Romualdez described as “disciplined, fearless and deserving champions.”
According to the Leyte 1st district congressman, “This team showed what it means to compete with purpose. They executed with focus, played with composure, and earned every bit of that gold medal.”
Outstanding Performance Despite Challenges
One of the team’s standout moments was a commanding 101–37 win against Singapore. Despite early taunts from their opponents, the Gilas Pilipinas Youth players remained composed and showcased their superior skills.
Romualdez also acknowledged the role of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in supporting the team. He highlighted that sustained investment in player development is beginning to yield tangible results. “Wins like this don’t happen by accident. They’re the product of long hours of training, smart coaching, and a strong support system. Gilas Youth delivered, and they deserve the nation’s full recognition,” he added.
Looking Ahead: Opportunities and Support
The SEABA Cup acts as the regional qualifier for the FIBA U16 Asia Cup. With this victory, the Philippines secured its spot in the continental tournament, where it will face tougher competition from the rest of Asia.
Romualdez assured that the House of Representatives will continue advocating for stronger sports programs and increased funding for both grassroots and elite athlete training. “We’re committed to giving our young athletes the resources they need to succeed. Victories like this prove that Filipino talent can shine with the right support. They’ve raised the bar for what we expect from Philippine basketball. I look forward to seeing them compete at the next level,” he concluded.
