Gladys Reyes Embraces Voice Lessons for Musical Film
Acclaimed actress Gladys Reyes shared her excitement about finally starring in a musical film, calling it a dream come true. The movie, titled “The Heart of Music,” marks a milestone as it is her first time singing on screen since starting her career in 1984. Gladys revealed she took voice lessons at the University of the Philippines to prepare, showing her dedication to mastering a new craft.
“Noong first day ko, tinanong ako kung may background na raw ba ako sa music. Sabi ko, ‘Wala po talaga.’ Then pinakita ko na sa teacher ko yung piyesa na gagamitin,” she said, describing her initial steps in music training. Despite limited time, she focused directly on the song piece, learning the first few lines of notes. Gladys admitted it was challenging, especially as a beginner.
Learning Piano to Perfect Her Role
She also learned to play the piano herself to avoid using hand doubles during shooting. “Ayokong ipa-double yung kamay ko. Gusto ko talaga ako ang nagpi-piano,” she shared. Her family has been very supportive, with her son Kristoff impressed by her swift progress. “What, in one day? How did you do that?” he asked. Gladys added, “Mahirap pero kung gusto mo talagang matuto may paraan.”
Support from Fellow Cast and Industry Voices
Gladys prepared intensely after learning she would be working alongside Robert Sena and Isay Alvarez, both experienced singers. Robert expressed confidence in her abilities, saying, “Naniniwala naman ako sa kakayahan ni Gladys and I know gagawin naman niya ang lahat. She’s an intelligent performer. It will take time talaga (na matuto sa singing).” Isay echoed this, praising Gladys’s hard work and commitment.
Returning to Vocal Roots
During the press event, Robert and Isay talked about how they maintain their vocal skills. Robert mentioned their transition from theater to mainstream media and events, emphasizing the importance of voice training. “You always have to go back sa roots na dapat talaga may voice training,” he said. Their singing style suits audiences like dignitaries and international guests, often requiring a musical or theatrical touch.
They continue to take voice lessons regularly. “Binibigyan talaga namin yung sarili namin na mag-aral uli or mag voice lessons. Minsan maganda na rin may nagche-check sa voice mo kung may problem. Training pa rin talaga,” Robert added.
Isay highlighted how aging affects a singer’s voice and the importance of vocal exercises. “As you age nagbabago talaga ang voice mo. Nahihirapan ka pero usual yun,” she stated. She shared an instance where she skipped a gig to focus on vocalizing, stressing that without proper practice, singing becomes difficult.
