Government and Private School Buildings Suffer Damage

Earthquake Causes Damage to School Buildings in Valencia City

VALENCIA CITY, Bukidnon — Several government and private school buildings suffered structural damage after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at 9:43 a.m. on October 10. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that at least 13 schools in this city were affected.

Local officials noted the earthquake’s impact was felt strongly across Bukidnon, with Valencia City experiencing notable damage to educational infrastructure. “Nakita gyud namo ang kadaut sa mga eskwelahan,” a community member said, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Extent of Damage Across Schools

The CDRRMO’s consolidated report detailed that both government-run and private institutions incurred damage ranging from minor cracks to serious structural impairments. This has raised concerns about the safety of students and staff returning to these facilities.

School administrators reported immediate inspections and assessments are underway to ensure the buildings’ stability. “Safety is our priority before classes resume,” officials reported, emphasizing the importance of thorough evaluations.

Response and Safety Measures

City disaster response teams have been mobilized to assist with damage assessments and coordinate with school authorities. Local leaders noted the urgency in addressing the structural issues to prevent any accidents or injuries.

Moreover, contingency plans are being developed to provide temporary learning spaces if repairs take longer than expected. Community members expressed support for these initiatives, understanding the need for uninterrupted education despite the challenges posed by the earthquake.

Looking Ahead: Rebuilding and Preparedness

Authorities are also reviewing existing building codes and disaster preparedness protocols to enhance resilience against future seismic events. “Kinahanglan nato nga mag-andam ug maayo,” a local official remarked, stressing the importance of preparedness.

The recent earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability and the critical need for ongoing vigilance and investment in infrastructure safety.
