Government Forces Seize Five Firearms in Samar Encounter
TACLOBAN CITY – Government forces seized five firearms during a clash with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Can-aponte, San Jose de Buan, Samar, authorities confirmed Tuesday. The operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the military to curb insurgent activities in the region.
Recovered weapons included four M16 rifles and a .45 caliber pistol. Alongside the firearms, troops also found a mobile phone, medical supplies, and personal items. This seizure reflects a significant blow to the rebels’ armament.
Details of the Encounter
The clash occurred Monday after local residents reported suspicious armed men passing through a nearby farm. Responding swiftly, the 87th Infantry Battalion engaged roughly 30 members of the NPA Yakal platoon from the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee.
Despite a 30-minute firefight, no casualties were reported on either side. The military unit remains vigilant, ensuring community safety while pursuing remaining insurgents.
Impact of Firearms Seizure on Insurgency
Major Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of the 8th Infantry Division, emphasized the significance of the recent firearms seizure. “With this recent seizure of firearms since May 2025, we have not only degraded the (communist rebels’) capability to sow fear among our communities, but we’ve also shown that armed struggle has no sanctuary in Samar,” Orio noted.
Since early June, intensified military operations in Eastern Visayas have led to the recovery of over a dozen high-powered guns and the neutralization of eight rebels. The surrender of In-In, a key NPA figure in the region, marks another milestone.
The military continues to work closely with residents, who play a vital role in reporting suspicious activities. This partnership strengthens efforts to dismantle insurgent groups and restore peace across Samar Island.
