Government Assures Support for Farmers Facing Typhoons
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assured Filipino farmers on Monday that the government stands ready to provide assistance if strong typhoons or the El Niño phenomenon affect the country. This assurance came during the “Ugnayan with Farmers” forum held in the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.
The president emphasized that the government’s readiness to help farmers adapt and recover from climate-related calamities is a priority. “If it’s still possible to plant again, the Department of Agriculture will step in and help you replant,” he said. “If it’s already too late, we will provide you with support. In addition to that, all our crops are insured.”
Learning from Past Challenges
Marcos recalled the El Niño event from 2023 to 2024, which caused over ₱15 billion in damages to farming and fishing communities, highlighting the severity of its impact. “If El Niño occurs again and successive typhoons hit — as we saw six typhoons in less than a month — we are now prepared because we know what needs to be done,” the president explained.
He added that the government has established various systems through the Department of Agriculture and the National Food Authority, extending down to local government levels to better respond to these disasters.
Recognition of Outstanding Farmers
Following the forum, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. introduced President Marcos to the 43 Gawad Saka national awardees. This recognition honors Filipino farmers, fisherfolk, scientists, researchers, and institutions who have made significant contributions and innovations toward achieving food security, sufficiency, and sustainability.
Local leaders noted that Gawad Saka remains the highest and most prestigious annual award given by the Department of Agriculture in partnership with local government units. It celebrates exemplary performances and dedication within the agricultural sector.
