President Marcos Pledges to Enhance Internet Speed in Eastern Visayas
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has committed to improving internet speed and connectivity in Eastern Visayas, with a special focus on remote locations. This initiative aims to address the connectivity challenges faced by geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) within the region.
According to a statement from government sources, the President discussed this during a recent meeting with the Regional Development Council (RDC). The government has developed a new system designed to provide reliable broadband access to these hard-to-reach communities.
New Technologies to Boost Connectivity in Remote Areas
President Marcos explained that as long as a GIDA is not too far from existing fiber optic networks, it is possible to extend connectivity there. “Basta’t may GIDA na, hindi gaano namang kalayo sa fiber optic, pwedeng kabitan,” he said.
He added, “We will put a tower, let’s say regular tower. But there are new technologies that are available that we can take advantage of or can provide internet service kahit na medyo malayo-layo doon sa fiber optic sa mga island na may satellite na.”
These advances include satellite technology that can deliver internet access to islands and areas far from fiber optic infrastructure, ensuring wider coverage despite geographic challenges.
Local Leaders Emphasize Benefits for Education and Community
Local officials have shown strong support for the President’s plan. A governor from the region highlighted the importance of enhanced internet access, particularly for educational institutions in remote areas.
“I confirm also for that internet connectivity, especially in the GIDA areas, since it will also help the education sector,” a regional leader expressed. She further emphasized, “We really want and we really pray na magkaroon ng internet connection ang mga GIDA areas natin.”
Ongoing Commitment to Regional Development
President Marcos reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the quality of life in Eastern Visayas. The government’s efforts to expand internet accessibility form part of broader programs aimed at fostering development and reducing disparities across the archipelago.
Reliable internet access is expected to boost economic opportunities, enhance education, and improve communication for residents in these isolated communities.
