Clarifying the Viral Kuratsa Dance Video
The Office of the Governor of Samar recently addressed the viral video showing Governor Sharee Ann Tan performing the traditional Kuratsa dance. The statement aimed to clarify misunderstandings surrounding the footage and the so-called “no sail” policy in Northern, Eastern Samar.
Officials reported the video was not captured during any extravagant dinner or government-related event. Instead, it took place during the Hermano Night of the Catbalogan City Fiesta, a well-loved cultural celebration where the Kuratsa dance is customarily performed. This event honors the rich heritage of the community and is an anticipated part of the festivities.
Kuratsa Dance: A Deep-Rooted Samar Tradition
Catbalogan observed its fiesta on August 24, celebrating St. Bartholomew, its patron saint. The Kuratsa is a long-standing cultural tradition in Samar and Leyte, performed not only at fiestas but also during weddings, birthdays, school events, and other communal gatherings. Community members noted that the dance often features a “gala” or money showering, where dancers receive peso bills as a symbol of generosity and unity—not extravagance or luxury.
Governor Tan’s Participation and the Gala Tradition
During the recent celebration, Hermano Mayor 2025 Ruben Panaligan hosted the event, inviting Governor Tan as a special guest. She joined the Kuratsa dance as part of the customary practice, alongside many attendees who also took part in the money showering. This collective participation highlights the community’s spirit rather than any individual display of wealth.
Proceeds Donated to Local Churches
Importantly, local leaders emphasized that all proceeds from the gala were donated to several parishes and chapels, including St. Bartholomew Parish Church, Diocesan Marian Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish of Ubanon, Our Lady of Ransom Chapel in Barangay Mercedes, and Our Lady of Salvation Chapel in Canlapwas, Catbalogan City. This act underscores the event’s charitable purpose and community support.
Respecting Tradition Amid Governance Concerns
Some citizens expressed concerns that public officials should avoid participating in cultural dances. However, officials clarified that Governor Tan’s involvement was not to exhibit power or wealth but to honor the Samaranon identity and bolster local church and community initiatives. “We acknowledge the sentiments of our people regarding broader issues in governance, and we remain committed to accountability, transparency, and improving public service delivery,” the Governor’s Office stated.
Upholding Samar’s Cultural Heritage
The provincial government reaffirmed its respect for public concerns while continuing to uphold traditions as vital elements of Samar’s heritage. These customs embody values of meaning, generosity, solidarity, and community—principles that also guide public service in the province.
